manga/anime
read Dungeon Meshi its good! its a fantasy/adventure story centered around cooking and eating monsters, starting out very light-hearted before diving into some heavier themes (i wont divulge because really its best experienced for yourself). the mangaka Ryoko Kui is INSANELY talented and im constantly in awe of her artistic talent as well as her worldbuilding skills, i seriously want to just study her daydream hour pages all the time. theres also an anime adaptation currently (2024) releasing for it done by Studio Trigger
music
this one is probably going to be very long. i looove finding new music and sharing it with people its like my favorite thing to do. i tend to gravitate towards rock (indie/alt rock especially) but i listen to a bit of everything in rotation. if i listed every band here i like this would be almost all of my available space.
- No Buses: a japanese indie band i REALLY like. ive listened to "Pretty Old Man" probably no less than like 200 times on loop. "With or Without It" is also REALLY good, something about their sound is very pleasing.
- the pillows: probably best known for doing the soundtrack to FLCL. they've also got a lot of older stuff! really good alt rock music
- Saint Motel: american indie-pop band! been following their stuff for yeeeears, favorites of mine are "To My Enemies", "Puzzle Pieces", "Daydream/Wetdream/Nightmare", and "A Good Song Never Dies"
- Foster The People: indie rock band, another one we've listened to for a long time. we had their "Torches" album burned onto a casette in elementary school and it got us through a lot of shit lol. i also like their newer stuff too! "Goats In Trees" and "Lotus Eater" are really nice.
- Brick + Mortar: an indie/alt rock duo with CRAZY catchy songs. "Brighter Than The Sun", "Terrible Things", "Dead Moon", their stuff is just banger after banger.
- Jhariah: i CANT make a list of my favorite bands and not mention my favorite artist ever. no specific genre to note here, he defines it as "no genre, all drama". their stuff covers a lot of different ground! im always looping his "a beginner's guide to faking your death" album, but lately ive also been going nuts over their more recent "the view from halfway down", "RISK, RISK, RISK!", and "PIN-EYE". he also just released a new album "TRUST CEREMONY"!! hes got something for everyone, please listen to their stuff!!
- The Long Faces: a relatively newer band, they only have a handful of songs but theyre ALL really good prog/alt rock stuff. "Sail Away" is definitely my favorite (the title in red at the top of my page is a lyric from it!), though i also really like "Jane!" and "Sum of My Cares"
- Nick Lutsko: i have a hard time recommending his stuff a lot of the time because like 80% of his discography is satirical (and if you arent looking for silly songs then it can be a turn off), but if you like really well made silly songs like "I Wanna Be at the RNC" and its much more dramatic version "RNC Reprise" AND/OR you just want a good indie/pop artist, check out his stuff! his "Swords" album is one of the non-comedy ones out and its all great. a couple picks from me would be "Sometimes", "Sideshow", "Software", and "Shakedown" (every song on this album starts with S, makes it very easy to remember)
games
i really cant shill this one its a half-dead mmo from 2007 but play Elsword i swear its actually really fun. it does still update semi-frequently. i main celestia noah + im building my opferung still. downsides unfortunately include a HUGE cutoff in lategame when it starts becoming pay-to-win, and weirdly starter gear expires after only a couple weeks? not the first time ive seen that in a game but its always weird to me, the gear helps you get through early game and start getting into the real stuff but if you cant keep up your momentum for grinding (and its very grindy, i personally like that) then youre going to lose a lot of your stats all of a sudden and it makes it a lot harder. the story and character designs are REALLY cool though!
ive been messing around on Ponytown a lot lately. its one of those visual chatroom games sorta? but all of the user avatars are ponies from mlp. its cute, and the character creator is shockingly good. like, better than most in just about any other game ive seen. most of the fun i get out of it is making new avatars, since im not a very social person. i do recommend checking it out at the very least for the character creator, if not for the social aspect. theres hordes of ponies for almost any fandom you can think of, as well as private party islands where people will host little events or roleplays. its neat. the ones below are my own personal avatar
